Writing quotes

Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake - Napoleon Bonaparte Writing became such a process of discovery that I couldn't wait to get to work in the morning: I wanted to know what I was going to say. ~Sharon O'Brien Substitute "damn" every time you're inclined to write "very;" your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be. ~Mark Twain When once the itch of literature comes over a man, nothing can cure it but the scratching of a pen. But if you have not a pen, I suppose you must scratch any way you can. ~Samuel Lover, Handy Andy, 1842

My first writing job

Good afternoon everyone,

Its been a long time since my last update and for that I apologize. I’ve have been working hard doing my A levels and AS levels but I have tried to write something every day! The ideas that don’t reach the blog are stored on the laptop or in my trusty notepad. At the moment I am in Cornwall with my Dad again doing revision for the upcoming exams, having driving lessons and when I have the time or need to unwind, writing.
Good news! I have my first writing job! I have been asked to review the local model train show that I visit and help at. My review will be published in the monthly Hornby magazine that all members collect. I have my own train set hidden away and several working locomotives that I am proud of. I’ve been going to the shows for about ten years and have been collecting the magazines for just as long. Hornby was a popular model train company in the 1940’s and 50’s but sadly stopped production of the 00 tracks in 1955. They produce more modern stock but I am interested in the early stuff (1950’s ish) if anyone has any old Hornby trains in the loft please let me know.
Until next time,

Jack

Acid Shampoo

Hello,

The link for Acid Shampoo has stopped working so I'm reposting it for everyone to see. Quite a few people have been asking to read it but have been unable too. So here it is. Enjoy. I need to stress that all characters are fictional and not based on real life events or people. Any similarities are coincidental. Aside from that it is also not for the faint of heart. This story was first published on Writer’s Online the link for which can be found here. https://www.writers-online.co.uk/

Acid Shampoo
“Arh!” Lara staggered forward in surprise and pain. The hot water cascaded down her back and steam billowed around her. She caught hold of the bathroom sink to steady herself and swore loudly. The droplets of water bounced off the bottom of the tub and burned her feet. She had almost gotten use to the temperamental heating while taking a shower but every now and then she would cry out in pain as she was burnt or scream with shock as ice cold water sprinkled down upon her.  Fuming, she cast the shower curtain back and jumped out of the bathtub leaving the water running. She flung the bolt back on the bathroom door and kicked it open. “Mum!” she bellowed. She could hear the reason for her pain now she had left the thundering of the shower. The washing machine was on.  She could hear it rattling away as her mother’s footsteps reached the bottom of the stairs. “Yes Sweetie, I thought you were having a shower?”

“I was until you turned that bloody thing on! Leave it!” She could hear her mother tutting at the bottom of the stairs as the machine started to roar. Lara shivered.  “Yes dear but you really shouldn’t be so long.”

“I’ll be as long as I want!” Slamming the door and pulling the bolt back across Lara returned to her shower.   Not a great start of the day. She thought as she stepped back into the bath. It’s only going to get worse...She could almost hear Miss Chaperon’s voice nagging about that unfinished essay at the bottom of her school bag.  Stuff her! Quickly adjusting the taps Lara dipped her arm under the torrent of water. It had cooled down but not by much. She jumped back in eager for the day to finish.

Josh is coming home tomorrow.  She longed to see him again, he would look good with his new tan. Next year he had promised to take her on holiday with him. Lara could hardly wait. “Spain.” She remembered saying. “I’ve always wanted to go to Spain.”  Josh could take her to Spain and they could stay there. He speaks the language and I can learn... Lara frowned at the memories of her Spanish lessons. This time I’ll pay attention. This time I need to learn!  What if Mum thinks he’s a thug? So what? She thought Eric was a nice boy and he’s doing community service.  Picking up the shampoo bottle she smiled sadly. Eric had given this to her after they had broken up as an “I’m sorry” present. Spain or Shampoo? Nice try Eric.

She poured some of the shampoo onto her hand. She examined the brown liquid. What did it smell of? Chocolate? Something moved on the street below. Lara peered through the window spotted a lone figure at the bus stop on the opposite side of the street. Something was familiar about the figure but Lara couldn’t place her finger on it, a blue hood was covering his face. It wasn’t until he waved at her that she realised he was looking directly at her. “Eric!” Lara screamed and jumped away from the window spilling some of the shampoo on the shower curtain.  Oh my god. Why is he watching me in the shower? Did he see anything?  She slammed the window and franticly rubbed the shampoo into her scalp. Lara thought about what she would say to the police when they came. He’s obsessive, he stalks me, he never leaves me alone! It was not true but that did not matter. Eric deserved the worse. All he would be given was a warning but at least it would scare him. Her thoughts were interrupted by ice cold water. “Ah!” Lara recoiled in shock, she lost of balance and slipped. Her head crashed into the window, cracking the glass and silencing the scream in her throat. Her arms flailed in the air but couldn’t find anything to grab on to. She landed in the tub with a metallic bang that echoed around the bathroom.

Lara’s eyes fluttered. Cold… I’m so cold. The memory of Eric at the bus stop came back to her. Jesus! Did he see me hit my head? Did he laugh? For a brief moment Lara wondered why no one had came to check on her. Then realised that only Mum was in the house and the washing machine was drowning out all other noise. Even if she had heard and investigated she wouldn’t have been able to help, Lara remembered. I’ve bolted the door. She tried to summon the energy to move but the cold water she was laying in had stolen her strength. She thought about turning the water off with her feet but discovered she had fallen too far away to reach the taps. She watched helplessly as blood ran down her body and mingled the water in the tub. The shower was still running, jets of icy water spayed down at her feet causing Lara to shiver uncontrollably. The only part of her body that didn’t feel cold was her head. Her head felt strangely warm. It must be the blood, she thought. I must be going red. “Help!” Her voice was weak, little more than a whisper.  No answer came.  Clearing her throat Lara tried again. “Help! Mum?” The only reply was the sound of the shower water.

The window is bubbling… Lara squinted.  Maybe the bang on the head is making me see things or maybe it’s the cold. Mum always said I need glasses. Lara tried to move but still lacked the strength to do so. She looked around desperate to hold something that could support her. Her eyes were drawn to the shower curtain but for different reasons. Holes had appeared in the curtain with red edges. They were growing. Lara blinked. What the hell?  They’re not growing… they’re burning!  Lara grimaced through the growing pain in her head. She wiped away the blood from her hair and placed her hands on the side of the bath ready to push herself up. Something flickered past her eyes. Several large hairs landed in front of her. Lara stared at them dumbfounded. After a second of shock fear took hold of her. She felt the top of her hand but was horrified to feel her skull. My hair is falling out! She screamed in horror.  The fear gave Lara to strength to move. It was too painful to stand but Lara managed to get into a kneeling position. A bang on the head doesn’t do this… She reached up to the sink but only succeeded in spilling bottles into the bath tub.  Brown liquid from the shampoo bottle poured out next to her. Lara stared at it in wonder and fear. What is this stuff? I won’t be calling the police, I’ll be calling an ambulance! Her head now felt like it was on fire. She placed her hand back on the sink so she could pull herself up but screamed in pain. Her hand was burnt. How is this happening? Brown goo dripped from her hand. Lara squealed with fright and shook her burnt hand in the dim hope of shaking the shampoo off. It stuck. How is it doing this? What the hell Eric done? Am I going to die? What do I do? Lara tried to scrabble to her feet but moved too quickly, her legs couldn’t support her. She fell back against the shower curtain. It broke free of its railing. Lara hit the tiled floor hard, the curtain landed on top of her, covering her like a bed sheet. She gasped in pain as inside of her knees hit the edge of the bath. She knew through the immediate burning pain that it was coated in the shampoo. She remembered that the shampoo had holes burned into it and was just in time to see little droplets of acid leave the curtain and explode on her body. She screamed desperately. The curtain was wrapped around her, Lara couldn’t move without excruciating pain.

“Lara?” Lara watched helplessly as the door handle directly above her turned. The door moved but the bolt kept it from opening. “Are you okay in there, love?”

Mum, help! Lara tried to say but she lacked the strength to do so. She contorted her face in agony as shampoo from her head started to run down her face. She could feel it burning into her skull. The power to scream had left her. There was a loud smash as the crack window glass broke free if frame and fell into the bath.

“What the hell was that? Lara? Lara! Open this door right now!” The door handle turned again and Mum banged on the door more forcefully but to no avail. Lara’s eyes blinked furiously to keep the running liquid out of her eyes. Someone’s arm came through the window, the gloved hand felt around for the handle. The window opened.  Lara could feel her eye lashes burning away and whimpered in pain.

“Lara! What’s wrong, dear? Open the door!”

Eric! His eyes scanned her helpless form half hidden by the melting shower curtain. He smiled at her. His gloved hand picked up the shampoo bottle from the bathtub and aimed it at her. “Lara. Have you fallen? Unbolt the door, I can’t get in!” Eric said something but Lara was only able to hear three words over the thundering of the shower, the door banging, her mother calling and her own heart beating. “Pretty... acid...hell” Eric squeezed the bottle. The acid splattered over Lara’s face. She closed her eyes tightly but tiny droplets from her burnt lashes had penetrated her eyelids.  She felt Eric spray her with the showerhead that turned the shampoo into acid. She heard Mother shouting but her words were inaudible. Lara heard Eric’s reply. “Send us a postcard in Spain” He said in a perfect imitation of Josh’s voice.

New Project

Hi,

I know this is the first update in four months (I hope you had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year)  but I’m sorry to say that school has been taking up most of my time again. The ideal time to post would have been in the Christmas holidays not at the end of the first week back but there you go. Another reason I have not been posting is because I have not been doing a lot of writing. I have an AS exam next week and an A level exam the week after so I need to revise. I need these grades so I can leave 6th form this year and go to University to study… Creative Writing!

I’ve decided to embark on another writing project. This project has no time limit or deadline so I don’t have to stress about finishing it before my exams. It is also a personal goal to me to complete and it has the advantage of letting me survive the exam period.  I’m in the process of writing a Doctor Who series! Unlike Camp NaNoWriMo from last August, this time I’m not writing alone. I have the help of another Who fan and fellow writer. Together we are planning out the series and are going to write it in script form as if it was going on TV. I am new to script writing so this is an interesting experience for me. As most of my friends now know I normally write novels, short stories and pieces of flash fiction. My friend writes scripts more often so we can learn from each other. I’ve also never written with a partner before so swapping ideas and coming to an agreeable idea is new to me but it is defiantly not a problem. I shall be doing group work in university so this could be seen as a dummy run.  I should stress our Doctor Who series is for fun and not serious, we don’t plan to send this off to be published or produced.

Whenever we reach a mile stone in this project I shall report it here. All character profiles are complete and the main story arch has been devised.  We have most of the episodes planned and are currently filling in the missing episodes gaps before we start writing.

Wish us luck.

Writing Report

Evening everyone,

There are many special things about this post. First of all it is my 30th! I also have 30 followers. It is the only post to be written at this time of night. (23:02) Most of them have been written before dinner or at school, not this one. I think that makes up for the fact that I do not have a story to accompany this post.
What this post does include is a re-cap of what I've been writing over the last 23 days. First of all I returned to school for my final year (a scary thought) so I can kiss any chance of finishing Flowers on a Guillotine goodbye. I have to finish my story (I will not name it in case a member of the writing group reads this) within the next week. It is nowhere near finished. I foolishly deleted my notes on it and now I can't remember the plot of it. Guess I'll have to make it up as I go along, it's more fun that way anyway.
After watching Doctor Who last week, I saw the script being read to the actors. They were smiling and laughing and the writer was clearly pleased. I have decided that I want to be that man. I want to write for Doctor Who. I know it will take years to happen but it WILL happen at some point in my lifetime. That's why I have downloaded Celtx and started to write my own Doctor Who script. With the help of my friend who is an expert in the subject of scripts. I seem to be getting the hang of it. :-)
Aside from this revelation I have shown Acid Shampoo and Gravestones to a couple of school friends and teachers who now fear me and respect me. I'm happy with that!
So, enjoy the rest of the night folks, I need to remove the cat from my bed and get some shut eye before my head explodes. There is only so much writing I can do.

I've finished Camp NaNoWriMo!

Hello everyone!

I have written 50,000 words in 31 days! I have finished Camp NaNoWriMo. Yeeha! (As I said to my American cabin buddies)
Before I write my acceptance speech I would just like to say thanks for all your support and wishes of good luck on Facebook, Twitter and of course on here. It was one of my main sources of motivation throughout this long month.
Of course with school next week, tomorrow I am attempting to deal with the masses of homework I have not looked at yet. I have a psychology essay due which should take me the rest of the week to write. All my free time has been focused on NaNo so now I can do my own thing. I learnt that I didn’t know how much free time I had before I lost him! Now I can manage my time properly and work out  when to write and eat and sleep.
For anyone has not done NaNo before I should warn you, you will feel guilty as hell if you don’t meet your word count. You will be given the shock of your life when you see the email saying well done you have reach XXX words. No I haven’t! Camp NaNoWriMo is a lot like school work. If you get behind you are going to have a tough time catching up. When you do you will feel amazing.
What did I learn about myself? I learnt that I can do it! I have also learnt that I am not alone. There are plenty of writers in the world, I did not realise how many there. I am sure I will remain life long friends with everyone in a cabin. (Cabin is NaNo talk for group) They were brilliant people and I’m sure once this thing is published they can have copies. I also learnt that I am a fictional murderer. On first draft I had 22 murders planned! Now I’ve knocked it down to 17 which is still to many! This is still the first draft I’m writing so I may go back and cut some people out(Kill them off, so to speak).
I’m off to print out my certificate now and put my winner badge on the blog. I also need to update that word count which I sadly ignored. Thanks for putting up with my posts about camp and I look forward to posting more short stories up on my blog when they are written.
Thanks for your support,
Jack.

Day 17 at camp

Hello Everyone,

First of all I had to check how many days I had been at camp before I wrote this. Then I worked out how many days left and how many words I needed to write to stay on track. I now need to write 2000words a day...

My holiday/writers retreat in Cornwall is over and now I am back at home. Yay! I can't tell you how much I missed my bed. Or my cat. Or my Play station, Or my... Now you can see my problem. So many distractions! I will admit in Cornwall I had a puppy to play with and a TV to watch but day time TV sucks (as if you didn’t know) and a puppy is only fun until it eats your headphones. After that it becomes a pain. Anyway, fingers crossed I find the time to write. I have two week’s worth of TV on planner that is taking up space and seven new books to read. Plus homework I should have done…

Speaking of school results day is tomorrow. I know there is no point worrying about it because I can do nowt about it know but you know what? I’m still worried.

I’m off to do some writing. It calms me down and I need to catch up. Somehow I’m 5000 words behind. How did that happen?
